You've heard that Shreveport, Louisiana is the software capital of the free world, so you have decided to go there and check things out. You take a bus to Shreveport and get off at the downtown bus terminal. You'd like to walk around and see the town, but it's getting dark outside.

You walk outside. As dusk falls, you can see lots of spotlights, neon lights, and a green laser beam coming from the east. To the south, there's a big sign by the street which you can't quite read at this distance.

You decide to investigate the lights. You see that the funny lights are mounted on a bridge over the river. It's some kind of art thing. Then, you notice that the green laser beam, normally aimed up in the air, is sometimes dipping down far enough so that if you climb up on the bridge you can get where the beam hits you directly.

You head south until you get close enough to read the sign, which says: "STREETSCAPE CONSTRUCTION -- Your Tax Dollars At Work." Unfortunately, in order to get this close, you also got too close to a big, gaping hole in the street, part of the construction project mentioned by the sign, and you stumble and fall into it. The hole seems bottomless!

You try to save yourself and grab the side of the hole. All you accomplish is to hurt your arm as it brushes against the jagged rock at the edge of the hole through which you are rapidly falling.

You fall all the way through to China, which isn't so bad given that you like Chinese food, but you lack sufficient Chinese funds to buy airfare back to Shreveport, and thus you are unable to complete this downtown Shreveport story. Maybe we'll publish a "Stroll through China" in a future issue, but until then you're on your own.

You climb up into the beam. The green laser beam hits you, and instantly you are teleported to a strange place full of pulsating lights. You wonder if this teleportation effect is what the bridge lighting artist actually intended, but there's not much time for reflection, because a strange protoplasmic creature is heading straight towards you.

Struting over to the blackjack table, place your bet. You've just read one of those books on how to beat the house in blackjack through card counting, but you haven't quite mastered the system yet, as shown by the fact that you rapidly lose all your money. Now you're broke, and can't even afford a bus ticket home, so you hitchhike back home in disgrace, ending your Shreveport adventure.

You walk to the roulette wheel. You put all your money on black, but the double zero comes up and you lose. Now you're broke, and you can't even afford a bus ticket home, so you hitchhike back home in disgrace. This ends your Shreveport adventure.

You insert a few coins in a slot machine, pull the handle, and it immediately comes up "Triple Jackpot"! You win a great deal of money, and fly home first class to start spending it. You're no longer very interested in exploring downtown Shreveport, so this ends your adventure.

Diving into the red beam, you teleport into the middle of the field at Shreveport's Independence Stadium during a CFL football game between the Shreveport Pirates and the Baltimore team that we can't say the name of because the NFL is suing about it. You get tackled, and end up in the hospital, which ends this adventure.

You close your eyes and jump into the white beam. You teleport right above the dome of the horticultural exhibit at the Barnwell Center on the Shreveport riverfront. You crash through it, making a big hole through which some rare butterflies escape. You fall into a group of romeliads. A security guard arrests you, and you spend the rest of your Shreveport trip in jail. This ends your adventure.

You look, then leap into the blue beam. You teleport into the SciPort science museum on the Shreveport riverfront. They're having an exhibit on insects, and you drop right into a display case. Once you get all the bugs out of your clothing, you exit. You see the river (with lots of interesting activity along it), a nightclub, and a street leading away from the river.

You pass out in the street, and when you wake up in the morning you find that your wallet has been stolen. You walk up a street lit by the new old-fashioned streetlamps which give an "Olde-Tyme" atmosphere to the neighborhood surrounding the neon lights and laser beams of the bridge. You find these lights and the brick crosswalks to be attractive, and you're careful to avoid falling into the big gaping holes in the sidewalk where the construction isn't quite finished.

Unfortunately, a prisoner with similar features to yours has just escaped minutes before, and you are mistaken for the escapee and taken to jail. Eventually, you prove your identity and leave, but that's days later, and you immediately leave town, ending this adventure.

You eat so much that you get really sick, and don't feel like doing very much activity for a while while you recover. This ends your Shreveport adventure.

You walk into the middle of an art auction. You scratch an itch on your nose, which is interpreted as a bid of $10,000 on a porcelain bathroom fixture painted in art-deco colors. When you can't come up with the money, you're arrested for fraud, and spend the rest of your Shreveport trip in jail, ending your adventure.

As you enter a tent that was eminating music, the music stops. It turns out the lead guitarist for the band has injured himself. Since you can play guitar, you offer to substitute, and begin playing. You do so well, a talent scout in the audience immediately signs you to a record deal, and you become a big star. You move to a Beverly Hills mansion, so this ends your Shreveport adventure.

The riverfront park is under construction and fenced off, but you enter through a hole in the fence. It's rather dark and eerie here. You see a statue, and you think you may have seen it move, but that could just be an illusion caused by the uneven light.

Standing before the statue, you notice that it is of Captain Henry Miller Shreve, the founder of Shreveport. And it does indeed seem to be moving. And then it starts speaking. It asks if you are the one who has disturbed his rest with all the construction that has been going on around his statue.

The statue calms down after you explain that you're not even a local resident, and had nothing to do with disturbing it. The Captain then looks around, and sees the gambling riverboat. He recalls his riverboat days in the 1800s, and decides to pilot this one. With big strides, the statue walks to the riverboat.

The Capt. Shreve statue takes control of the riverboat and sails it out of its dock, to the consternation of the casino officials dockside. The gamblers aboard mostly don't notice as they continue their games. A security guard notices that you showed up just as the boat was taken, and holds you responsible, so you get arrested. This ends your Shreveport adventure.

You enter the sports museum where you notice a display of rare, valuable baseball cards. To your surprise, you notice that one of them looks just like one you remember having at home. You run into a customer service representative locking the place up for the evening, but you manage to convince her to first sign you up for a renewal of your Softdisk PC subscription. You find the baseball card at home, and sell it for a lot of money. You become wealthy and live happily ever after.

When you go home and find your baseball card, it turns out to be enchanted with the spirit of the ballplayer on it. The card begins talking to you, something about how you need to build a big stadium in your back yard so that all the old-time players will come there.
